Vaccines

Vaccines for dogs, cats and horses are being continually researched, resulting in ever-changing recommendations for protocols. At Edmonton Holistic Veterinary Clinic, we use the minimum vaccines necessary to produce immunity, because studies show the risk of side effects increases with each injection. These side effects can be life-threatening and are more common in animals prone to allergic, immune-mediated and autoimmune conditions. At Edmonton Holistic Veterinary Clinic, we determine the need for vaccination through titer testing.

Titer tests determine whether antibodies against a particular bacteria or virus are present in the bloodstream. Titer testing is available for the most dangerous and common infectious diseases of dogs and cats, namely parvovirus, feline panleukopenia, canine distemper, and rabies. If those antibodies are above a certain level, your pet is immune.

Bring your pet in to us no later than 8 weeks of age and we’ll design a custom vaccination protocol for them based on:

  • Titer testing
  • Previous vaccinations
  • Their medical history and list of prior complaints
  • Previous vaccine side effects
  • Risk of exposure
  • Legal requirements for vaccination

Commercially available homeopathic nosodes have been advocated as alternatives to vaccination. Clinical trials of these products have failed to show any benefits.
